In the story, " The Bad Begginning" by Lemony Snicket the main characters are Violet Baudelaire, Klaus Baudelaire, Sunny Baudelaire, and Count Olaf. Acoording to the book, "all the kids... were intelligent children, charming, and resourceful, and had pleasent facial features, but they were extremely and mostly everyting that happened to them was rife with misfortune, misery, and despair." The Baudelaire children recently lost their parents in a house fire and will be sent with one of their relatives to live with them. The three children are important in this story because they become orphans and will be sent with Count Olaf who will try to steal their inheritance. Count Olaf is also important in the story because he is the villian, and as previously said he will try to steal the kids inheritance. Violet is a static character because in the beginning of the story she is a very smart person and at the end she continues to be one. Klaus is also a static character because he loves to read in the beginning and throughout the story he stays the same way. Sunny , the youngest child, is the same but in her case she loves to chew things and like her siblings she stayed the same. Count Olaf is the same because he starts of as the villian and continues to be a villian after he flees. For example, he was forcing Violet to marry him in order to recieve her inheritance but Violets intelligence overcame Count Olaf's intentions and signed the document with her left hand instead of signing with her right because he found out that in order to be legally married they both have to sign with the hand they write with. So, she signed with her left-hand to make it look like she was legally married to Count Olaf. After Violet saw that Count Olaf had let Sunny free and then told him the truth.
In this story the gate icon, different perspectives, connects with it because there are many characters and they all view Jake differently because of his background and the way he is. Others also viewed the Applewhites family a different way than Jake did due to the fact that he was a visitor and did not know that family as much as other did. One example that supports my statement is that E.D. thought that her family was not normal because they did not have TV's in every room. This can be proven because on page 38 it says, " Sometimes, especially when her friend Melissa was talking about the cable channels she watched all the time, E.D. wished they were like a normal family, with cable and a TV set in almost every room." This quote shows that E.D thinks that her family is not normal because they do not have T.V's in every room in their house.IN other people point of view they could have thought that having that in your house is completely normal. For instance, I have no problem knowing that a family does not have televisions in every room. Another example is that, " ...
In the book, " Surviving the Applewhites".the main characters are E.D., Jake Semple, Sybil Jameson, Cordelia Applewhite, Randolph Applewhite, Destiny Applewhite, and Hal Applewhite. E.D. is the girl that is living with Jake Semple at Wits End and is one of the daughters of Sybil and Randolph. Jake Semple is a boy that does not have good behavior due to the fact that he was kicked out of all the schools in Rhode Island(2). He is taken to the Wits End, the Applewhites family, after his family sees that he can't be admitted to a school without having him get kicked out in less that a month. In the story it says, " She was also the children's mother, but her name wasn't Applewhite, it was Jameson. Sybil Jameson." (12). This proves that Sybil Jameson is the mother of all the Applewhite children, ahe is also married to Randolph. She is a great writer that wrote the wonderful mysteries. Cordelia Applewhite is the oldest daughter of all the Applewhite children and is the girl that Jake sees and make him assure that she is a true girl. Randolph Applewhite is the father of all the Applewhite children and is married to Sybil. He is great director and is working on a play. Destiny Applewhite is the youngest of all the children and is curious, likes to sing, and asks many questions and exploring new things. Hal Applewhite is the eldest of all the children and is an introverted artist and them becsme a sculptor. The dynamic characters in the story are Jake Semple because as he spendes more time with the Applewhite's he changes his way of being. For example he quits smoking after a long time living at Wits End and E.D because she stops worrying about school and decides that she like to sing and act. The static characters are Destiny because she thought that he was cool and throughout the whole story, she did not change that way of being or that thought towards Jake Semple, Randolph is also a static character because he id funny, impatient, and a creative person when h e is first introduced on the story and at the end he is still the same way. This means that throughout the story he was maintained the same.
The main conflict in this story is the fact that Erica's mother has breast cancer and told her three kids the situation but, in the book it does not explain why she got breast cancer. Erica's mother having breast cancer is a conflict and not just an important event in the story because nobody in her family wanted Mom to be in this situation but, since life has unwanted and unexpected events, Mom has breast cancer. According to the book (pg. 103),"They didn't have a care in the world as they sat under the sun—the cancerous sun...I looked at their chest. I couldn't help it, couldn't help comparing them to Mom, couldn't help wondering if someday they'd have to get mastectomies." This quote shows that Erica is affected by her mom having breast cancer and now that she knows her mom has cancer, she can't help but compare her mothers chest with the other girls. Another quote is," I plan to work in this year's Race for the Cure. It's for breast cancer, and the reason it matters so much is because my mom is sick." This shows that Erica is fundraising for the campaign called, "Race for the Cure" in response to her mom having breast cancer. This conflict is both internal and external because the cancer is within Mom's body and you can see that they removed her right breast because she has cancer. It's also a personal situation because it has to do with her life and the whole world does not need to know that she has cancer. This conflict is not resolved because it is a health issue that does not guarantee a cure. I know that it is not resolved because the story ends with people chanting as stated in the book on page 324, " ...lots of people, including some we'd never met, were chanting,"Race for Lisa! Race fro Lisa!" That is how the story ended and did not mention anything about Mom curing of cancer.
In the book, "Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel", the gate icon, Changes Over Time, is used when Mom hasn't got her mastectomy done.Time goes by and the day of her mastectomy arrives, she is taken to the doctor and stays there for a couple of days. On page 83, it mentions that Mom arrives after a few days wearing a shirt that buttoned down the front and Erica glanced at her chest and noticed that her right side was flat like an Amazon. To sum it all up, Mom had both her breasts before the mastectomy and overtime her right side was flat because she had the mastectomy done to her. Another example for the gate icon, Changes Over Time , is that after Mom got her mastectomy done, she started going to physical therapy. With Mom having breast cancer, she had to be at the doctors most of the time. As said in page 108, ... Mom started going to physical therapy ,so she left me in charge of Carmen and Jimmy for a few hours every afternoon. This means that overtime, Erica had to start taking care of her siblings every afternoon.
